Highly Inflamably

Sydney to London in a Kombi - for iPad or iBooks on macOS

"The videos really add another dimension to this book."

Book cover showing a Kombi van amongst a crowd of people and vehicles. Middle East in the 60s.

Highly Inflamably is the travel diary of Frank Arnold (Awarding Winning Australian Film Director) and Noel Cantrill (Award Winning Sound Engineer). The digital book captures their 1966 journey from Sydney to London. It is written as two intertwined narratives following each day of their adventure. Inflamably isn't a typo.

Both were working at ABC TV Studios in Sydney. Embarking on this great adventure was an opportunity to take extended leave to gain overseas experience in their chosen crafts in the TV industry. (Noel Cantrill later worked at Regent Sound Studios, recording for The Who, The Rolling Stones, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney). They decked out a Kombi, shipped it to Karachi, Pakistan and then followed in the ship, the Marconi, starting the adventure in Singapore. Once on the road, they travelled through Asia and the Middle East in a Kombi, going to places that we hear of in today's news, but for all the wrong reasons.

"A great read from two gentlemen who travelled the world in a way that cannot really do today."

You discover through their experiences that whilst there was unrest in some of those parts of the world, the people they met were very hospitable to the two young aussie travellers.

"A must read for all fellow travellers and those experiencing life on the road from another era."

Being creatives in the emerging 60s TV industry, the essentials packed into their Kombi included a Bolex movie camera and a film camera. We've digitised the 16mm film Frank shot and have remastered Noel's 300+ amazing photos. These images have captured the 1960s in the Middle East and Asia. Visually, they visited some incredibly amazing places. It's a time machine back to the 60s, to places that were not the focus of the world's attention - namely the Beatles, Rolling Stones and other events that England is well known for.

"I love this book a true travel adventure from a time now lost."

Being able to see videos and pictures inside a digital book that span the iPad glass delivers a totally different reading experience compared to paper. We could not show you the streets of Baghdad or the Chateaus in rural France if we only had words. In this eBook, we can. This is a great example of how to leverage multimedia to tell a compelling story and spark the reader's imagination with a touch of reality. The creation of this book is also a great reminder of what you can do if you keep a travel diary.

A great Christmas gift idea or birthday present for the adventurer or traveller you know. Or a great read for the arm chair traveller who is taking the Sunday afternoon couch journey.

If you check out the iTunes reviews, this book is getting 4 and 5 stars.
